St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release
St. Joseph, MO - For the second straight night the Blacksnakes (11-17) knocked off Sioux City (13-15) in a thriller, 6-5. The 'Snakes won their season-best fifth in a row on a ninth inning run without a base hit.
Shingo Mitsumori was outstanding in his first start and the 'Snakes plated the first run in the third on a Jake Whitesides single.
In the sixth, Sioux City batted around while scoring four times to take the lead, including a Chris Grossman two-run triple. Sioux City hit three triples in the game.
But the 'Snakes got the four right back in the home, with help from a pair of errors. The big play was a two-run error by centerfielder Ryan Ruiz, dropping Jimmy Mojica's flyball that gave St. Joe a 5-4 lead. The other error was a catcher's interference call-the third in the last two games. Sioux City tied it at five in the eighth on a wild pitch with two outs and two strikes on the batter.
Then the real fireworks started when Mark Burke was called out on strikes in the eighth. Burke argued vehemently and as he had neared the dugout, was ejected by plate umpire Jamie Still. Burke then charged back towards the plate umpire before being restrained by Mark Nussbeck as Chris Carminucci picked up the argument. He was then ejected and, before leaving the field, threw three chairs, a bucket of baseballs and a pair of bats onto the field from the dugout.
In the bottom of the ninth, Scooter Jordan drew a walk to lead off and was sacrificed to second. After Jake Whitesides was walked intentionally, Wil Quintana hit a high flyball towards the right field corner. Kevin Henry made an outstanding running catch and as his momentum took him into the corner, Jordan tagged from second, raced around third and scored ahead of the relay for the winning run.
The series and homestand finale take place tomorrow at 2:05pm at Phil Welch Stadium. Donovan Graves (1-2) starts for St. Joe against Sioux City's Trevor Marcotte (1-1). Gates open at 1pm as kids get ice cream until game time and can run the bases after the game. It is the team's first "Bark in the Park" day, so bring your dogs to the stadium, too. Our webcast hits the air at 1:45pm with the Heartland Health Pre-Game Show.
