Wings Defeat Buffalo 14-11

PHILADELPHIA - The Wings (8-8) failed to make the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season despite a 14-11 win against Buffalo, Saturday at the First Union Center in front of 12,796 fans. In order to advance to the postseason, Philadelphia needed a victory, plus wins by Toronto and Minnesota. The Wings held up their end of the bargain with a dominant win, but got no help from the other two teams. Toronto fell to Rochester, and Minnesota lost to Portland. In its own game, Philadelphia controlled from the start, led by Jake Bergey and Jeff Ratcliffe. Goalie Matt Roik made36 saves for the win. "The guys played hard here tonight," said Wings' coach Lindsay Sanderson. "We came out with the win that we had to have. Overall this season, we made a lot of changes and are a very young lacrosse team. We went through a lot of bumps. We had some positives that we'll take out of this and some changes we have to make. We need to grow as a team. " With the season on the line, Philadelphia jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead with a goal by Jake Bergey less than a minute into the game. Jeff Ratcliffe increased the lead seven minutes later. Buffalo finally got on the board with a power-play goal by Jason Crosbie. The Wings got the goal back 25 seconds later as Dan Marohl added the goal to his two assists. Bergey netted his second of the game 20 seconds later to give Philadelphia a 4-1 lead. The two teams started out the second quarter by trading goals twice. Mike Regan and Keith Cromwell scored for the Wings, while John Tavares and Crosbie tallied for Buffalo. Philadelphia took over with goals by Ratcliffe and Peter Jacobs in a five-second span. Marohl recorded his fourth assist on Ratcliffe's goal. Bergey completed the hat trick for Philadelphia, but the Bandits ended the scoring in the half with a pair of goals by Tavares. The Wings led, 9-5, going into the locker rooms. Philadelphia's Ratcliffe and Buffalo's Kim Squire started the second half with power-play goals. The Wings took over with three unanswered goals (Brad Self, Jeff Spano, Sean Greenhalgh). Jon Harasym netted his first for the Bandits to round out the scoring in the third quarter. The Wings had already been mathematically eliminated by the final quarter, but the team kept on fighting. Buffalo started the scoring with goals by Teat and Billy Dee Smith. Marc Morley answered for Philadelphia, and Teat responded for the Bandits with his second goal of the game. He ended the scoring in the game by completing the hat trick. Jeff Ratcliffe led the Wings in scoring with four points (3G,1A). Nine other players scored goals for Philadelphia, including Mike Regan (1G,2A), Sean Greenhalgh (1G,3A), Keith Cromwell (1G,1A), Brad Self (1G,1A), Peter Jacobs (1G,1A), Dan Marohl (1G,4A), Jeff Spano (1G,1A), and Jake Bergey (3G,1A). John Tavares led the Bandits in scoring with eight points (3G,5A). Five other players scored for Buffalo, including Billy Dee Smith (1G), Jon Harasym (1G,1A), Dan Teat (3G,2A), Jason Crosbie (2G,2A), and Kim Squire (1G.3A).
