Austin Bruins News Release

A late collapse spoiled an otherwise solid game for the Austin Bruins (22-11-1) Saturday night at the Odde Ice Center in a 4-2 loss to the Aberdeen Wings (21-12-2). The two teams split the weekend series, as the Bruins took Friday s game 4-1.

The ice was slanted in the Bruins favor in the first period, as Austin showed a relentless forecheck and sustained pressure, outshooting the Wings 13-5. It paid off late in the frame, when Aberdeen struggled to clear their zone for over a minute, Lucas Kohls (Forest Lake, MN) made them pay with a wrist shot high in the slot that beat Wings goaltender Chad Catt (Williamstown, MI). Austin carried the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

On an early power-play in the second period, the Wings tied the game when Jordan Heller (Bemidji, MN) split the Bruins defense and beat Nick Lehr (Roseville, MN) over the left shoulder. The score remained 1-1 for the majority of the period, but Jay Dickman (Shoreview, MN) put the Bruins back in front on the power-play. Dickman used his size to win a corner battle and then muscled past a Wings defenseman toward the net, before throwing a backhander on goal. Catt stopped the initial shot, but Dickman cleaned up his own rebound to give Austin a 2-1 lead through two periods.

The comeback started for Wings with under six minutes to play in the game when Heller scored again, this time short-handed to tie the game at two. Then on a delayed Bruins penalty, Bjorn Sigudarson (Reykjavik, Iceland) gave Aberdeen their first lead when he lifted a quick wrist shot under the crossbar. With under two minutes to play, TJ Roo (Coon Rapids, MN) snuck a wrap-around into the net to put the game away. Catt made 30 saves in the win, while Lehr stopped 21 of the 25 Wings shots in the loss.

Next weekend, the Bruins welcome the Minot Minotauros to Riverside Arena for the first time this year. Austin hasn t faced Minot since late-September when the two teams split a weekend series out in North Dakota. The Bruins and Minotauros will face-off at 7:05pm Friday and Saturday nights. Both games will be on fasthockey.com, with Saturday s broadcast also airing on 1480AM KAUS.
