Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, Kan. - Following a torrid week at the plate, Wichita Wingnuts outfielder Tony Thomas was announced as the American Association Pointstreak Player of the Week on Monday for the week of July 9-15.

Thomas put together an impressive seven-game stretch against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks and Texas AirHogs. The veteran slugger finished the week 11-for-28, recording at least one hit in each contest. It was the extra-base power that truly set Thomas apart, as he notched four doubles, one triple, and four home runs among his 11 hits. Thomas scored eight runs on the week while driving in 11, powering the Wingnuts to a 5-2 record.

In the game just prior to the start of the week on July 8, Thomas went 3-for-6 against the Sioux City Explorers with two doubles and a home run, scoring three runs and driving in three. Over the last eight games, the 32-year old has raised his batting average 29 points to .257, while also drawing five walks to bump his on-base percentage 35 points.

Thomas continues to lead the American Association with 15 home runs and 116 total bases, checking in at second with 46 runs driven in and fourth with 44 runs scored. His slugging percentage of .542 is also fourth.

The New Orleans native is only four home runs away from establishing a new career high, and is on pace to challenge the Wingnuts single season home run record of 30, set by CJ Ziegler in 2013.

Thomas earned consecutive All-Star nods in each of the last two seasons while with the St. Paul Saints, hitting a combined 31 home runs and adding 109 RBI. He was acquired by the Wingnuts over the offseason from the Chicago Dogs in exchange for right-handed pitcher Josh Goossen-Brown.

The Wingnuts take to the road for a three-game series with the Lincoln Saltdogs on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 PM, and will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM KGSO, TuneIn and americanassociationbaseball.tv.
