Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kans. - Behind a pair of three-run frames, the Wichita Wingnuts erased an early deficit to claim a 7-3 series-winning victory over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Sunday afternoon at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
For the second straight day, Fargo-Moorhead (15-14) struck first, plating two in the second inning. A couple of errors helped out in the frame with one allowing the first run to score, and another keeping the inning alive for a Kes Carter RBI single.
Wichita (16-13) pulled a run back in their half of the second, as Brent Dean drove in a run with a single. The RedHawks answered right back however, as a Brian Humphries fielder's choice made it 3-1.
The Wingnuts then grabbed the lead with back-to-back three-run frames in the fourth and fifth. Leo Vargas and Tyler Urps each picked up an RBI on a ground ball to tie it, then Richard Prigatano gave the home team the lead with a two-out run-scoring single.
Brent Clevlen then led off the fifth with a solo homer off of Will Mathis (0-1), giving him a team-leading seven long balls, as well as his club-high 23rd RBI. Later in the inning, Harrison Kain doubled T.J. Mittelstaedt home, and Dean picked up his second RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly.
The four-run lead was plenty for the Wichita staff. Charlie Leesman (2-2) went the first five and allowed all three Fargo runs, although none of the three were earned. The lefty also struck out a season-high five, leading the Wingnuts to a total of 11 for the afternoon.
Behind Leesman, the Wingnuts went to the trio of Chase Johnson, Chad Nading, and Jesse Pratt. Johnson and Nading each struck out a pair in scoreless sixth and seventh frames respectively, before Pratt came on to retire all six he faced, including a pair of strikeouts of his own to slam the door on the RedHawks.
The Wingnuts will hit the road Monday and head down to Laredo to begin a three-game series against the division-leading Lemurs at Uni-Trade Stadium. Veteran righty Jon Link (4-2, 3.58) will be on the hill for Wichita, while Laredo has yet to announce it's starting pitcher for Monday's series opener. First pitch is set for 7:05, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
