WICHITA SHUTOUT BY FARGO
The Wichita Wingnuts were shutout for the first time in 2016 Saturday night, falling 8-0 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in the middle match of their three-game series at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. RedHawks starter Tyler Herron got on a roll early, retiring the first 10 Wingnuts he faced on the evening. While Herron was mowing Wichita down, his teammates got him an early lead in the second. After an error brought home Fargo's first run of the night, Bryan Johns collected an RBI single to make it 2-0. The visitors doubled their advantage in the third, as Josh Mazzola hit a two-run homer. In the fifth, Fargo's offense was at it again. Ryan Pineda was called safe on a close play while stealing second, keeping the inning alive for the RedHawks. The visitors capitalized, with K.D. Kang singling home Pineda, and Brian Humphries following with a two-run homer. Fargo scored one more run on an error in the seventh, giving Herron more run support than he needed. The righty tossed his second complete game shutout of the season, keeping Wichita to a season-low four hits on the night.
RUBBER MATCH MATCHUP
With each team having won one of the first two games of the series, the Wingnuts and RedHawks will play a rubber match to decide the set this afternoon. Wichita will send veteran lefty Charlie Leesman to the hill for his second start of the season against Fargo. Leesman's first outing against the RedHawks was also his first start of the season, back on May 28 at Newman Outdoor Field. In that contest, the southpaw was saddled with the loss, allowing six runs, two of which were earned, on five hits in four and two thirds. Leesman's opponent this afternoon will be fellow left-hander Will Mathis. Mathis has made just one start so far in 2016, having appeared 11 times out of the RedHawks bullpen so far. In the lefty's only start so far, he shutout Texas over six and a third innings.
ON THE HORIZON: LAREDO
After Fargo leaves town, Wichita will head south for the first of three trips to Laredo to face the division-leading Lemurs. The two teams split a four-game set earlier this month at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in their first series meeting of 2016.
