Wingnuts Slay Dragons, On To Final Four

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts rolled the number six seeded Dayton Dragons in the Elite Eight round of CNBC.com's best minor league baseball logo contest yesterday.

By the time the Wingnuts office opened on Thursday, Wichita already trailed 72%-28%. The Wingnuts pulled even by mid-afternoon and had taken a slim lead by late evening. When the dust settled this morning, the Wingnuts were declared the winners with 68% of the almost 18,000 votes cast.

The contest, which ends on Wednesday morning, began with 64 teams in a single-elimination bracket decided by online voting. The Wingnuts entered the tournament as a #12 seed and have already defeated the #5 seed Inland Empire 66, as well as the #4 seed Savannah Sand Gnats, the #16 seed Trenton Thunder and now the #6 seed Dragons.

The Wingnuts will have their hands full on Monday when they meet the #2 seed Clinton Lumberkings in the Final Four. The winner will face the winner of today's other final four match up on Tuesday for the Championship. The #12 seed Augusta Greenjackets are taking on the #3 seed Southern Illinois Miners today.

Wichita's newest baseball team will begin their inaugural season of play on May 7th, when they host the Sioux City Explorers for a three-game set at Lawrence Dumont Stadium.
