Wingnuts Power Past T-Bones

Wichita Wingnuts News Release


WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Kansas City T-Bones 12-3 in an exhibition game at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Wichita used an eight-run bottom of the third inning to take control of the game. Trailing 2-0, David Amberson legged out an infield single on a groundball to second base to start the rally. Jared McDonald walked to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, Jake Kahaulelio ripped a line drive, three-run home run to left-center that gave the Wingnuts their first lead of the game. John Rodriguez followed with a double down the left field line, and took third on C.J. Ziegler's line drive single to left. Cole Armstrong made it 4-2 on a groundball single through the right side that plated Rodriguez. Amberson and McDonald each slugged two-run doubles later in the inning to finish the outburst.

Matt Padgett hit a solo homer to right-center in the top of the fourth to account for the T-Bones' final run.

Ziegler drove in the Wingnuts' ninth run with a double to left field in the bottom of the fourth. Ziegler eventually scored on a passed ball and throwing error by Kansas City catcher Michael Thomas.

In the bottom of the fifth, Amberson led off with a single to center and stole second base. Kahaulelio beat out an infield single on a groundball to third which allowed Amberson to score from second and give the Wingnuts an 11-3 lead.

Abel Nieves drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth to make it 12-3.

Kristhiam Linares earned the win for Wichita, allowing one earned run on one hit in three innings of relief.

Bryce Shafer started for the Wingnuts, allowing two earned runs on one hit in three frames. Shafer walked three and struck out two in a no-decision.

Lucas Irvine started and took the loss for Kansas City, allowing eight earned runs on eight hits in three innings. Irvine struck out two and walked one.

Joe Testa, Daniel Bennett, and Daniel Schmidt each pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Bennett and Schmidt were perfect on 10 and eight pitches respectively.

Wichita took its at bat in the bottom of the ninth inning and added another run on a solo home run to left from Stephen Yoo. Amberson finished with three hits and three runs scored. Kahaulelio, Rodriguez, and Ziegler also had multi-hit games.

The Wingnuts are now 3-0 this spring, and continue their exhibition schedule with a Friday double header at Lincoln's Haymarket Park. The Wingnuts face the T-Bones at 6:00 p.m. before taking on the host Saltdogs at 8:00 p.m. The Wingnuts return home to close out spring training on Wednesday, May 15th against the Winnipeg Goldeyes at 11:05 a.m.

The 2013 season of Wichita Wingnuts baseball begins Thursday, May 16th against the Kansas City T-Bones at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Prior to the game, a ceremony celebrating the life of bench coach Brian Rose will take place.

Beginning this season, fans can use cash at all points of sale in Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Debit and credit cards will still be accepted. Fans can resolve outstanding balances on cash cards from previous years until June 1st, 2013.
