Wichita Wingnuts News Release
ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Wichita Wingnuts trailed by as many as six, but scored the final eight runs of the night to rally for a 10-8 victory Wednesday night to claim their series from the St. Paul Saints at CHS Field.
The Wingnuts (54-35) were down 8-2 heading into the fifth, and the first two batters were retired before the visitors started a rally. A single and an error kept the frame alive for Brennen Salgado, who jumpstarted the comeback with a three-run homer to give him a career-high four RBIs for the game.
One inning later, Wichita took the lead. T.J. Mittelstaedt and Matt Chavez hit back-to-back RBI singles off of Benji Waite (2-2) to get within one, and then Martin Medina gave the Wingnuts the lead with a two-out two-run single.
Once Wichita had the lead, the bullpen started to dominate. Mike Devine (1-0) went two and a third, his longest outing as a Wingnut, keeping St. Paul (56-34) at bay, and earning the win.
Behind Devine, Gage Smith and Chad Nading each worked a scoreless frame, and Chavez gave Wichita an insurance run in the eighth, launching a solo home run off of the batter's eye in straightaway center to make it 10-8.
Frankie Reed came on in the ninth for Wichita and loaded the bases with two down, but he got Vinny DiFazio to fly out to end the game and earn his 19th save.
Early on, the Saints offense was rolling, thanks in large part to David Bergin. In his second game since he was acquired in a trade with Sioux Falls, Bergin opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the first.
Salgado got Wichita a run closer with a run-scoring double in the second, but Bergin answered with a two-run single in the third to make it a three-run game.
Zack Cox got one back in the fourth for the Wingnuts with a single, but Bergin and the Saints were at it again in the home half. Ryan Cavan and Tony Thomas each drove in a run with singles, before Bergin capped off his big night with another two-run single.
The eight runs were as much as St. Paul could muster however, as the Wingnuts plated the final eight tallies of the night to send the Saints to their third consecutive series loss, and increase their lead over the Laredo Lemurs to four and a half games in the South Division.
After an off day on Thursday, the Wingnuts return to Lawrence-Dumont Stadium to open-up their final homestand of the regular season Friday night against the Texas AirHogs. First pitch is set for 7:05, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
