Wichita Wingnuts News Release

The Wichita Wingnuts evened their four-game set with the Laredo Lemurs Saturday night, knocking off their division rivals 7-2 at Uni-Trade Stadium.

For the second straight night the Lemurs (55-42) scored first, as Denis Phipps homered for the second time in the series, a two-run shot, to make it 2-0 in the third.

The Wingnuts (61-37) took a lead they did not relinquish in the fifth. Zack Cox started the inning with a solo homer off of Ryan Beckman (8-8), which began a run of seven straight reaching for Wichita. A T.J. Mittelstaedt RBI single tied it up for the visitors, and they then gained the lead on an RBI single by Nick Van Stratten.

Wichita then got two more RBI singles to add some insurance to their newfound lead, as Harrison Kain and Brent Dean extended the lead to three.

The five-run frame was enough for Jesse Pratt (6-2) and the Wingnut bullpen. Pratt responded well after the two-run third, retiring Laredo in order in each of the next two frames, and lasting six innings to earn his first quality start as a pro.

Mike Devine and Chad Nading each worked a scoreless frame in the seventh and eighth, respectively before the Wingnuts added a pair of insurance markers in the ninth.

Van Stratten tripled Matt Chavez in for his third knock of the night, then came into score on a sacrifice fly by Kain.

Frankie Reed then came on in the ninth and allowed the first two Lemurs to reach, before retiring the next three in order to seal the victory.

The Wingnuts and Lemurs continue their four-game series Sunday night at Uni-Trade Stadium. Left-hander Charlie Leesman (2-2, 5.51) will be on the hill for Wichita, while Laredo will counter with fellow southpaw Zach Dodson (2-1, 0.34). First pitch is set for 7:05, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
