Wichita Wingnuts News Release
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Led by a strong pitching performance from Tyler Kane and a three-hit three-RBI night from Matt Chavez, the Wichita Wingnuts claimed the opener of their three-game set with the Texas AirHogs 6-1 Monday night at AirHog Stadium.
The Wingnuts (4-1) struck first, as Martin Medina brought home Chavez with a single in the second. The lead was short-lived however, as Texas (1-4) answered in the home half on a Levi Scott RBI double.
Wichita regained the lead in the next half inning, plating three. TJ Mittelstaedt restored the advantage with a single, then Chavez added a two-run single off Griffin Russell (0-1) to stretch the lead to 4-1.
The lead was plenty for Kane (1-0), who shined in his 2017 regular season debut. After allowing the second inning run, the righty scattered three hits over his final four frames of work. Kane also added seven strikeouts, a new career-high.
Behind Kane, who set down the final five he faced, the Wichita bullpen was dominant, tossing three innings of perfect relief and adding four more strikeouts. For the night, the Wingnuts staff struck out 11, and retired the final 14 AirHogs they faced.
Wichita notched a pair of insurance tallies late, adding single runs in the eighth and ninth. Leo Vargas picked up a two-out RBI single in the eighth, and Chavez capped the evening off with his third knock of the night in the ninth, an RBI single that scored Brent Clevlen.
The Wingnuts and AirHogs continue their three-game set Tuesday at AirHogs Stadium. Wichita will send right-hander Alex Boshers (1-0, 3.00) to the hill, while Texas will counter with lefty James Russell (0-0, 4.50). First pitch is set for 11:05 a.m., and the game will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM KGSO, TuneIn and www.americanassociationbaseball.tv.
