WICHITA GROUNDS AIRHOGS

In their first road game of the new season, the Wichita Wingnuts got a sparkling performance from Tyler Kane and the pitching staff in route to a 6-1 win over the Texas AirHogs Monday night at AirHogs Stadium. Kane worked six innings in his 2017 debut, allowing just one run while striking out a career-high seven. The Wingnuts got Kane the lead in the second. Matt Chavez started the inning with a double, then scored on a Martin Medina single. After Texas evened the score in the home half, Wichita took the lead for good in the third. TJ Mittelstaedt knocked the go-ahead run in with a single, and Chavez then brought home two more with a knock of his own. The three-run margin held until the eighth, when Leo Vargas plated Richard Prigatano with a single. Chavez capped off a three-hit three-RBI night in the ninth, bringing Brent Clevlen around with a single. The six runs were plenty for Kane and the bullpen. Kane retired the final five he faced, then turned things over to the trio of Jared Wilson, Mike Devine, and Austin Boyle, who tossed a perfect each to extend the run to 14 straight retired.

STAFF STARTING STRONG

With Tyler Kane's start last night against Texas, the Wingnuts have now gone through their starting rotation once. Kane allowed one run on five hits across six innings, making him the fourth of the starting five to allow two earned runs or less in his first start. In 30.0 innings so far, the Wichita starters have combined to post a 2.10 ERA and have held opponents to just 19 hits, for a .174 batting average. The quintet has also struck out 22 while walking just five, for a strikeout-to-walk ratio of better than four to one. The last three starts for the Wingnuts have been especially strong, as Charlie Leesman, Jordan Cooper, and Kane have combined to allow just one run in 18.0 innings. The relief corps has been strong as well, pitching in with a 2.45 ERA over their first 11.0 innings of the season. The bullpen has been even better at racking up strikeouts and limiting free passes, striking out 14 and walking just one through five games. Both the starter and bullpen were dominant last night, as the four righties combined to strike out a season-high 11, and set down the final 14 they faced.
