6-RUN 1ST SINKS WICHITA
The Wichita Wingnuts gave up six runs in the first Saturday night as the Gary SouthShore RailCats cruised to an 8-3 victory at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Walks were the key factor in the six-run opening frame, as starter Anthony Capra walked six in the inning. After walking the first two, back-to-back singles brought in the first run and loaded the bases. The second run came in on a sacrifice fly which was the second out of the inning, and then the wheels came off for Wichita. Capra walked the next four in a row, three of which were with the bases loaded, before a Masato Fukae single capped the inning, and saw the Wingnuts starter exit due to injury. The Wichita offense had their chances, but failed to capitalize on most of them, tying their season-high with 14 left on base, including 10 in scoring position. Harrison Kain and T.J. Mittelstaedt each had an RBI single, but Gary answered with a run to push it back to a six-run margin both times. The final run of the night came in the bottom of the ninth, when Brent Clevlen led off with a solo homer, his third of the year, which is tied for the team lead.
BULLPEN STEPS UP
With an injury forcing starter Anthony Capra to leave after just two thirds of an inning last night, Wichita had to call on the bullpen to do some heavy lifting. The trio that was called upon stepped in a big way, allowing two runs in eight and one-third innings of work. Right-hander Alex Boshers came in first, and went a season-high four and a third innings, allowing one run on six hits. Jesse Pratt came in next, and allowed just one run as well across his three innings. The rookie righty also struck out three RailCats, a new career-high. Finally, Chase Johnson worked a scoreless ninth inning, his first appearance since returning to the club after a trade with Sioux Falls on Friday afternoon.
T.J. ON A TEAR
T.J. Mittelstaedt has been hot at the plate on this homestand, going 9-for-21 (.429) to raise his season average to .351, which is seventh in the league. The California native leads the Wingnuts in RBIs with 13, and his three homers are tied for the club lead. Mittelstaedt also leads the American Association in walks (19) and on-base percentage (.513).
