Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kans. - For the second straight day the Gary SouthShore RailCats grabbed an early lead that the Wichita Wingnuts never really threatened, as the visitors cruised to a 9-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Lawrence-Dumont to claim the weekend series.
The RailCats (9-9) wasted little time in getting to Tim Brown (1-1), as they opened the scoring four batters into the contest on an RBI single by Jeremy Hamilton. The next batter, Jose Sermo, then launched a two-run homer to put the visitors in front by three.
Wichita (6-11) answered in the home half. Christian Stringer led the inning off with a double, then came around to score on a single by T.J. Mittelstaedt. Sunday was Mittelstaedt's fourth straight game with at least one RBI for the Wingnuts, and he currently leads the club with 14 on the year.
After the first, the Wingnut offense offered very little against Gary starter Richard Castillo (2-1). The righty retired eight straight at one point, only seeing it come to an end when he hit Brennen Salgado with a pitch in the fifth. Castillo went six innings for the visitors, giving up a run on four hits.
With Castillo keeping Wichita's offense down, Gary started to pull away. The RailCats scored one in the second, then added their second three-run frame in the fourth when Cameron Newell, Alex Crosby, and Brennan Metzger each consecutively collected RBIs to make it 7-1.
Gary added single runs in the fifth and ninth, the latter of which was the only run allowed by the Wichita bullpen in four innings of work between the duo of Chase Johnson and Fabian Roman.
The Wingnuts hit the road Monday to begin a seven-game road trip which begins with a three-game series against the Kansas City T-Bones at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Wichita will send right-hander Eddie Medina (0-3, 10.59) to the mound in Monday's series opener, while the T-Bones have yet to announce their starter. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
