Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WINGNUTS WIN LATE AGAIN

After a walk-off win on Wednesday, the Wichita Wingnuts scored again late to take a series-clinching 5-4 victory over the Kansas City T-Bones Thursday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The Wingnuts got on the board early, as Wednesday's hero Zack Cox hit a two-run homer for the second straight at-bat, giving Wichita a 2-0 lead in the first. Kansas City got one back in the second on a Starlin Rodriguez home run, then proceeded to tie the game and take the lead on an RBI single by Brett Wiley in the third, and sacrifice fly by Sergio Leon in the fourth. Wichita took the lead back in the fifth, as T.J. Mittelstaedt continued his hot homestand with a two-run single. Kansas City pegged back the home team once again in the seventh, as Anthony Gallas tied it up with an RBI double. With the game still tied at four in the eighth, Wichita loaded the bases with no outs for Martin Medina, who hit a fly ball to left that was deep enough to bring home Brent Clevlen. Closer Frankie Reed took it from there, retiring the T-Bones in order in the ninth to seal the Wingnuts eighth win in nine tries against Kansas City.

GREAT SERIES FOR THE 'PEN

The Wingnuts bullpen was dominant all series long against Kansas City, and played a big role in Wichita grabbing the last two games of the series in the late innings. Last night after getting seven frames from starter Alex Boshers, the bullpen took over in a 4-4 tie. Gage Smith retired the T-Bones in order in the eighth, and picked up his first win as a Wingnut for his efforts when Wichita took the lead in the home half of the frame. Frankie Reed closed it out with a three up, three down ninth to pick up his 18th save. Overall, the Wichita bullpen allowed just one unearned run in 13.1 innings during the four-game series.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

After taking three of four on a three-day homestand against Kansas City, the Wingnuts are right back on the road for a six-game road trip that will take them through Gary and St. Paul. The trip begins tonight with the opener of a three-game set at U.S. Steel Yard against the RailCats. In the Wingnuts only prior trip to Gary this season, they claimed three out of four. The trip to St. Paul will be the two clubs' only meeting all year.
