Wichita Wingnuts News Release
GARY, Ind. - The Wichita Wingnuts opened up their six-game road trip with a 4-1 loss to the Gary SouthShore RailCats Friday night at U.S. Steel Yard.
Gary (43-42) broke a scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the third. John Holland started the inning with a single, moved to third on a pair of wild pitches, then scored on an RBI single by Chase Harris. One out and one walk later, Frank Martinez tripled into the right field corner to bring in two more and make it a 3-0 lead.
Wichita (52-32) got a run back in the very next inning. T.J. Mittelstaedt tripled with one out, then scored on an RBI double by Nick Van Stratten, who collected his first hit and RBI since he was signed by the Wingnuts earlier in the day.
Pitching took over once again over the next several innings. Wingnuts starter Eddie Medina (5-5) retired nine in a row at one point, with the run coming to an end when he hit John Holland in the seventh. That hit batter turned into an insurance run for the RailCats, as Holland scored on an RBI double by Andy DeJesus.
Taylor Black (6-6) kept the Wingnuts off the board outside of the run in the fourth, and went six for the RailCats, with the bullpen trio of Lars Liguori, Santiago Rodriguez and Jorge De Leon finishing the game off for Gary.
The Wingnuts best chance to score in the latter innings came in the eighth, as they put runners on the corners with one down, but a double play killed the rally to keep the deficit at three. Wichita then went down in order in the ninth to bring the game to an end.
The Wingnuts and RailCats continue their three-game weekend set Saturday night at U.S. Steel Yard. Vetran righty Tim Brown (8-2, 4.51) will get the starting nod for Wichita, while Gary will turn to fellow right-hander Charle Rosario (8-3, 3.31). First pitch is set for 6:10, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
