Wichita Wingnuts News Release
SAUGET, IL - The Wichita Wingnuts played a Frontier League opponent on the road for the second straight day on Saturday, and just like Friday night they came up just a bit short. Great pitching, good defense, and a three-run inning led the Gateway Grizzlies to a 3-1 victory at GCS Ballpark.
Starter Jon Link looked outstanding in his second and final start of the spring. He worked 3.0 innings, allowed just one hit and a lone walk, while striking out four.
The Grizzlies did the first damage of the night in their half of the fourth inning against the Wingnuts' Erik Lambe. Niko Vasquez singled with one out, before Michel Wing struck with a two out, two-run home run to deep left field. Lambe then issued a free pass to Richard Seigel, who raced around to score when Xavier Macklin drove a ball into the left field corner for an RBI double.
The Wingnuts loaded the bases with one out in the eighth inning against reliever Alex Bos, but couldn't cash in. Jake Kahaulelio was called out on strikes and Brent Clevlen was retired on a fly ball to right field to end the threat.
Chun-Hsiu Chen hit his first home run of the spring to begin the ninth, but the rest of the hitters went down in order as Justin Erasmus earned the save for the Grizzlies.
David Amberson was the only member of the Wichita lineup to record multiple hits as he singled in both the third and seventh innings. In addition to Link, Matt Robertson, Alan Williams, Mike Zouzalik, and Matt Nevarez also threw scoreless innings of relief in their appearances.
The Wingnuts travel to Lawrence Free State High School on Sunday to play the Gary SouthShore RailCats at 2:05 p.m.
The seventh season of Wichita Wingnuts baseball begins Thursday, May 15th against the Grand Prairie Airhogs at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
