Wingnuts Announce Final Year of Lawrence-Dumont Stadium
WICHITA, Kans. - After 84 years, thousands of games, millions of fans and countless memories, the Wichita Wingnuts announced today that the 2018 season will be the last for Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
"Lawrence-Dumont Stadium has been such an integral part of not only the history of Wichita baseball, but the entire fabric of this community," Wingnuts Owner and President Nate Robertson said. "The Wingnuts organization feels incredibly fortunate to have called Lawrence-Dumont home for the past decade, and for having the chance to continue adding to the rich history and tradition of baseball here in the Air Capital."
The Wingnuts have called Lawrence-Dumont home for the entirety of the franchise's ten-plus years of existence, and the stadium was the setting for the team's American Association Championship in 2014. It has hosted the National Baseball Congress World Series since its construction in 1934, and in 1949 served as the last host for the College World Series before its move to Omaha.
"The history of Lawrence-Dumont ties together so many different eras of Wichita baseball, and we're incredibly excited to celebrate several of the great teams and players to have suited up in this stadium," Wingnuts General Manager Brian Turner said. "Fans will really appreciate our promotions honoring Lawrence-Dumont throughout the season, along with the chance to watch a game at this historic venue for the final time."
During the 2018 season the Wingnuts plan to honor Lawrence-Dumont with a series of giveaways and events recognizing the stadium's place in Wichita history. Four Saturday home games during the upcoming season will be Wichita Heritage Nights, including specialty jerseys from the professional teams of the city's past. Uniforms from the Wranglers, Aeros, Pilots, and Jobbers are scheduled to be worn and then auctioned off after the game.
Tuesday, August 28 will be a premium giveaway night, as the first 1,000 fans will receive a mini replica of historic Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Select Wichita Wednesdays throughout the season will include a Lawrence-Dumont Stadium t-shirt giveaway as well. The full promotional schedule is also available online at wichitawingnuts.com/promotions.
