Winckowski dazzles, Brodt slams in 8-1 win over Ems
July 29, 2018 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, B.C.) - Canadians starter Josh Winckowski was determined to bounced back from a tough start five days earlier as the right-hander from Fort Myers, Florida dazzled going seven strong innings to help Vancouver to a third straight victory over the Eugene Emeralds on Sunday afternoon. The win kept Vancouver in at least a share of top spot in the North Division at 4-2 (.667).
Winckowski allowed nine hits but none that really shook the right-hander as the Emeralds only run of the game opened the scoring in the top of the 6th inning when Levi Jordan singled home Johnathan Sierra to give Eugene a 1-0 lead.
Vancouver would answer in the home half of the 6th inning with a trio of runs that featured a bases clearing triple from Nick Podkul that cashed in Griffin Conine, Chris Bec and Bryan Lizardo. Tanner Kirwer stole his 18th and 19th bases of the season in the bottom of the 7th inning before Otto Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring the native of Sherwood Park, Alberta helping the Canadians to a 4-1 lead.
The offense put Sunday's game out of reach in the top of the 8th inning when Jake Brodt hit his 2nd home run of the season, a tall towering grand slam off Eugene reliever Mitch Stophel that extended the Canadians lead to 8-1.
Notes: Vancouver (4-2, 23-21) keeps them in at least a share of top spot in the North Division with both Everett and Spokane in action later tonight. It also marks the first time in 2018 that the Canadians are two games above .500... Vancouver is now 5-3 (.625) against Eugene in eight head-to-head match-ups.
The Canadians will send LHP Elio Silva to the mound on Monday in hopes of a fourth straight victory.
Tickets to Vancouver Canadians Baseball are on-sale now to both Monday (July 30 at 7:05pm) and Tuesday (July 31 at 7:05pm) games and can be purchased by calling 604.872.5232, online at www.canadiansbaseball.com or by visiting the Nat Bailey Stadium Box Office at 4601 Ontario Street, Vancouver, B.C.
