San Jose Giants News Release
VISALIA - The San Jose Giants won their ninth consecutive game with a 12-1 thrashing of the Visalia Rawhide on Thursday evening at Recreation Park. Luke Anders homered and collected five RBI's while Kelvin Marte tossed six scoreless innings to lead San Jose to the victory. The win improved the Giants' overall record to 62-28.
Anders (3-for-5, 2B, HR, 5 RBI) belted his eighth home run of the season and finished a triple shy of the cycle to pace an 11-hit San Jose offensive attack. Ryan Cavan (2-for-3, 2B) added his team- leading 24th double and scored three times while Jose Flores (2-for-5, RBI) also produced a multi-hit game.
Marte (7-5) limited the Rawhide to five hits with two walks and two strikeouts during his stint on the mound to pick-up the win. The left- hander pitched out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the bottom of the first inning before the Giants offense went to work in the second.
Cavan led off the top of the second with a line drive single to left before Alex Burg drew a walk. After Anders struck out, Flores grounded out moving the runners to second and third. With James Simmons at the plate, a passed ball from Visalia catcher Rossmel Perez allowed Cavan to score the first run of the night. Simmons then reached on a fielding error committed by third baseman Bobby Borchering to bring home Burg for a 2-0 advantage.
San Jose added to their lead with two more runs in the top of the fourth. Cavan again started a run-scoring rally as he hammered a double to the fence in deep right center. Burg followed with a sacrifice bunt, but was safe at first when pitcher Diogenes Rosario bobbled the ball for an error. Anders then delivered an RBI single to right before Flores bounced into a fielder's choice to score the second run.
The Giants then exploded in the top of the fifth sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six runs on five hits. Facing reliever Christian Beltre, Ehire Adrianza began the inning with a walk before stealing second. After Jarrett Parker drew a walk and Tommy Joseph struck out, a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Cavan then walked to load the bases before Burg stepped to the plate and lined a 3-2 pitch into the left field corner for a double to easily score Adrianza and Parker. Anders was up next and he drove a double into the left center field gap plating two more runs for an 8-0 lead. Flores kept the rally going with a single and then Simmons walked to load the bases again. Dan Taylor was summoned from the bullpen to replace Beltre, but Gary Brown grounded a single into right field to score Anders and Flores to make it 10-0.
Anders capped the San Jose scoring for the night with a towering two- out, two-run homer down the right field line in the top of the sixth.
After a long bottom of the first, Marte cruised through the rest of his outing. He set down Visalia 1-2-3 in the second, fourth and sixth innings. Marte allowed the leadoff batter to reach base in the third and fifth frames, but induced double plays to end both innings.
Tom Vessella (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO) relieved Marte to begin the bottom of the seventh and maintained the shutout by keeping the Rawhide off the scoreboard for two innings.
Jake Dunning (1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) pitched the bottom of the ninth and hit Matt Davidson with a pitch to leadoff. After Borchering reached on an infield single, Davidson took third when Alfredo Marte grounded into a fielder's choice and then scored the only Visalia run when Keon Broxton also bounced into a fielder's choice.
Rosario (5-3) suffered the loss after surrendering four runs (one earned) on three hits over 3 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out three. Beltre was charged with six runs (all earned) on three hits with four walks in one inning of relief.
