Wilson Tobs News Release
Wilson, N.C. - The Wilson Tobs, summer collegiate wood bat team, have added a pair of left handed bats for the 2020 season. Outfielder Dusty Baker joins Wilson from nearby Mount Olive while Wright State's Damon Dues shores up the infield.
The left-handed-hitting Baker is a Clyo, Georgia native who made a huge impression on the Trojans' lineup in the shortened spring season, scoring 24 runs in just 23 games to go along with a five extra base hits and six stolen bases. Baker transferred to Mt. Olive after playing three seasons at nearby East Carolina University where he averaged just under 100 at bats each season for the Pirates while platooning in the outfield.
Baker is no stranger to summer baseball and especially not the Coastal Plain League. Before playing for the Morehead City Marlins last summer, Dusty played in the Ripken league as a freshman and the Valley league his sophomore year. Last summer, Baker was a member of the the CPL champion Marlins and voted to the Eastern Division All-Star team. Batting in the top part of the order all summer long, he put together an impressive stat line and helped lead the Marlins to a 37-14 record and the CPL title. Baker finished the summer leading the team in batting average with a .359 clip along with an OPS of .968, in addition to his 22 stolen bases in 23 tries. Baker's experience, leadership and ability to create and produce runs will fit in perfectly with head coach Harry Markotay's offensive this summer for the Tobs.
The six foot infielder Dues hails from from Vandalia, Ohio. The red-shirt sophomore has played shortstop, second and first base for the Wright State Raiders the last three seasons including his freshman season that was cut short due to injury. Though a small sample size because of the injury his freshman spring, Dues batted .317 in 15 games where he hit five doubles, reaching base at a .462 clip.
Playing in 52 games during a scorching red-shirt freshman year, Dues had an OPS of .914 which included an impressive 52 walks and 28 stolen bases in addition to nine doubles and four home runs. That summer he started off playing in the Cape Cod League for the Brewster Whitecaps where he played the middle infield before coming to the Coastal Plain League for a short stint with the Fayetteville Swampdogs.
This spring Dues picked up where he left off playing short and getting on base at a high rate. The Tobs are very excited to have someone with Dues' offensive abilities and defensive versatility on the infield night after night. Expect Dues to be a mainstay in the top of the batting order this summer.
The Wilson Tobs are gearing up for the 2020 season, with a league opener set for July 2. We would like to dedicate each successful season to the Wilson Community, Coastal Plain League Organization, Host Families, Corporate Partners and the dedicated fans throughout the city of Wilson.
