ATLANTIC CITY__Mitch Williams has resigned as the manager of the Atlantic City Surf to pursue other business opportunities, the team announced today.
"Mitch gave our organization a lot and he will certainly be missed," said Atlantic City Surf general manager Mario Perrucci. "We will begin a search for a new manager immediately."
Williams took over as the manager of the Surf on July 1, 2002, midway through the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball season, replacing Tommy Helms. He then directed the Surf to a record of 45-22 and the second-half South Division championship of the ALPB. In the playoffs, Atlantic City lost to Newark two games to one in a best-of-three series. The Surf finished the 2002 season with the best overall record in the ALPB at 73-57.
In his first full season as Atlantic City''s manager, Williams directed the club to a record of 63-63 in 2003. Williams'' career record with Atlantic City was 112-90.
Williams, the former reliever with the Philadelphia Phillies who set a team record for saves in 1993 when he helped the club reach the World Series, joined the Surf as the team''s pitching coach prior to the 2001 season.
Williams was the third manager in Surf history. He was preceded by Doc Edwards (1998-99) and Helms (2000-02).
