Chico Outlaws News Release

FULLERTON, CA - Peanut Williams decided to bring his own fireworks to America's birthday - the Fullerton first baseman blasted two home runs and knocked in five runs as Jeremy Sugarman tossed a complete game five-hitter, beating the Chico Outlaws 8-2 Tuesday in the opener of a three-game series at Goodwin Field on the campus of Cal State Fullerton.

The contest started with the Outlaws scoring what would prove to be their only runs of he game - in the top of the 1st inning, Jason Matteucci led off the game with an infield single and moved to second on a Bobby Gandolfo base hit to right. A passed ball moved both runners into scoring position...Matteucci coming home on a Desi Wilson groundout and Gandolfo scoring on Mike Mallory's line single to left. Fullerton came right back in their half of the 1st - Chico starter Brian Kroll walked Bret Levier and Rich Pohle, setting the stage for Williams, who launched a full count pitch that hit the top of the left field wall and above the fence's painted line that signifies a home run...the round-tripper giving the Flyers a 3-2 lead.

In the 2nd the Flyers jumped on Kroll, batting around to score five times. Jacob Wallis led off the inning with a double and came home two batters later when Toshi Sasa tripled to the right field gap. Levier promptly delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Sasa...Garry Templeton II followed with a double and crossed the plate when Rich Pohle singled to center. Williams capped the rally but going yard again, this time clearing the wall in right field to put Fullerton up 8-2. That would be all Sugarman needed, who allowed just two hits the rest of the way and retired the last ten Outlaws batters in order to lock down the victory - only Fullerton's fourth win against Chico in 11 tries this season.

Sugarman (2-3) struck out a season-high eight in earning the complete game victory...Kroll (2-3) actually lasted six innings (at one point retiring 13 in a row) but was saddled with the loss. Mallory had two of Chico's five hits on the night...Fullerton's eight hit attack was paced by Williams and Templeton, who had two safeties apiece. Tuesday's loss dropped the Outlaws to 17-15 and kept Chico three back of Reno with just eight games to play in the race for the Golden Baseball League's first half title...Fullerton improved to 14-17 with the July 4th win. Game two of the series is set for Wednesday with left-hander Grant Gregg (1-2) on the mound for the Outlaws...the Flyers are expected to counter with righty Todd Gelatka (2-1). Game time is 7:05pm.
