Long Beach Armada News Release

(Pleasanton, CA. July 5th, 2006) The Golden Baseball League announced today that it has approved a trade between the San Diego Surf Dawgs and the Long Beach Armada that exchanges Jose Canseco for newly-signed Cuban defector Yoankis Turino. The trade is effective immediately and Canseco will join the Armada for their next home game at Blair Field in Long Beach on Friday, July 7th at 7:05 P.M.

A Surf Dawg for under a week, Canseco played in just one game with the team before this trade, which was precipitated by unforeseen family circumstances that Canseco faced upon his return from Chico on July 4th. He demanded a trade to a team near his home in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, and the Surf Dawgs were able to reach an agreement with the Armada.

"Although we are disappointed that we won't have Jose's bat in the lineup, we are confident that the addition of Turino will help the Surf Dawgs in the second half of the season," said Gary Lochansky, San Diego Surf Dawgs President and Managing Partner. "We are excited about Turino, and just hope we've got him for awhile before a major league organization calls."

Turino, 27, is a pitcher that has played at the top level of Cuban baseball since his late teens. A member of the renowned Cuban team, the Havana Industriales, his team won the country championship in three out of four seasons. Left off Cuban international teams because of concerns that he would defect, he features a mid-90s fastball, a big-league curveball, and outstanding control. He successfully escaped to the Dominican Republic and made it to Los Angeles last month. He will join the Surf Dawgs as they return home for their game against the Chico Outlaws on Friday, July 7th at Tony Gwynn Stadium on the campus of San Diego State at 7:05 P.M.

"Although he had a rough first game, I'm sure Jose will get his timing down and provide us a strong bat in the middle of the order," said Long Beach Armada Manager and former Major League All-Star Darrell Evans. "We look forward to having him as a member of the Armada and are interested to see if he can also contribute to the top pitching staff in the league."
