Texas Wildcatters News Release

Beaumont, TX (March 7, 2004) – The Texas Wildcatters used the extra session to defeat the San Diego Gulls for the second straight night, this time in a shootout 5-4. San Diego opened up the scoring at the 3:22 mark of the opening period as Sylvain Deschatelets tallied his 19th goal of the season. Wildcatters forward Ryan Fultz evened the score three minutes later as he took a pass from Clint Cabana to record his sixth goal of the season. Wildcatters netminder Davis Parley turned away 12 of the 13 shots he faced in the opening period.

The Wildcatters took the lead early in the second period as Fultz tallied his second goal of the game unassisted. San Diego responded 21 seconds later as Chris Gobert scored his 16th goal of the season. Fultz struck again for Texas as he recorded the first hat trick at Ford Arena. Only one other player, Bobby Cunningham, has scored three goals in one game in the brief Wildcatters history. Later in the period, Gulls right wing Greg Barber took the puck the length of the ice to score a shorthanded goal, his 24th tally of the year. Texas took their third lead of the game later in the period as two of the newest Wildcatters hooked up for the go-ahead goal. Chris Taliercio took a pass from Adam Stefishen to record his second goal of the season, giving Texas a 4-3 lead as they headed into the third period.

The score remained the same until the 12:11 mark of the final period as David Neale took a centering feed and tapped in his fifth goal of the year. Fans did not agree with the call as the back of the net came up, but the goal was still credited to San Diego. The score remained tied at four as the third period came to an end and these two teams would battle it out in overtime.

The two teams combined for a total of four shots in the extra session, but neither team put the puck into the net and the Wildcatters would find themselves in their fourth shootout of the season. Fultz and Cory Morgan scored for the Wildcatters in the shootout, and Parley turned away four of the five shots he faced as Texas won their second game in a row at Ford Arena against the Western Conference leaders. Parley won his second straight and 16th of the year as he ended with 36 saves. Ferhi suffered his second straight loss, making 33 saves.
