Wildcatters Sign Two University of Maine Standouts

August 28, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Texas Wildcatters News Release

Beaumont, TX (August 28, 2006) The Texas Wildcatters Hockey Team is pleased to announce the signings of Colin Shields and Steve Mullin. The two were teammates at the University of Maine, playing together for the Black Bears from 2002-2004. They now join fellow Maine standout, goaltender Matt Yeats with the Wildcatters for the 2006-07 season in Southeast Texas.

Shields, 26, is a forward who is extremely fast and possesses a level of skill. He has a good shot with a quick release. Shields returns to North America after spending a season in the British Elite League with the Belfast Giants. In 31 games, he registered 14 goals and 33 assists for 47 points.

After averaging 1.5 points per game last year, Wildcatters Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Malcolm Cameron thinks the change of rules will benefit Shields' game. "With the new rules in hockey, the game is tailored for a guy like Colin," said Cameron. "He has outstanding speed, hands and is a tremendous presence on the power play."

Before heading across the Atlantic, Shields spent time with three different ECHL clubs during the 2004-05 season. In 62 games with the San Diego Gulls, Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies and Greenville Grrrowl, Shields netted 9 goals and had 26 assists for 35 points.

While attending the University of Maine, Shields was one of the Black Bears top scorers in each of his three seasons there. In 2003-04, he led the school in scoring with 44 points and finished his collegiate career with 61 goals and 56 assists for 117 points in 120 games.

A 5'11'', 176 pound native of Glasgow, Scotland, Shields was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the sixth round of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He was the first player the Flyers ever drafted from the United Kingdom.

Mullin, 23, is beginning his first season in professional hockey after four seasons at the University of Maine. A reliable stay at home defenseman, Mullin played in 123 games with the Black Bears, accounting for 2 goals and 10 assists for 12 points. The 6'0'', 180 pound Mullin is a native of Cartwright, Manitoba and was an assistant captain last season at Maine.

"Steve was highly recommended by his coaches and has the type of work ethic and focus we are looking for to have a good season in a Wildcatter jersey," said Cameron.

The new-look Wildcatters open their third season on October 20 at Florida, before returning to Ford Arena for their home opener on October 28 against the Pensacola Ice Pilots.
