South Georgia Wildcats News Release

ALBANY, GA- The South Georgia Wildcats introduced Rodney Blackshear as the team's new Head Coach today.

This season will be Coach Blackshear's third year as a head coach in the af2. He spent the last two seasons leading the Lubbock Renegade, who posted a 9-7 record last year and made a playoff appearance. Blackshear's coaching experience is not limited to Arena Football as he served as a Graduate Assistant working with the wide receivers at his alma mater, Texas Tech University, during the 2003 season. He also served as the Wide Receiver Coach at the University of Houston for the 2005 season.

"Coach Blackshear meets all of the criteria we were looking for in a head coach," said General Manager Darren McPhail. "He has head coaching experience, a multitude of arena football experience, and he possesses a passion for winning and doing things the right way."

Blackshear enjoyed a stellar playing career at Texas Tech University before entering the Arena Football League. He posted 1,980 career receiving yards to go along with 14 touchdown receptions at Texas Tech. He was voted an All-SWC performer during his Junior and Senior seasons. He still holds a school record for career average yards per catch with 20.4 yards.

After completing his college career, Coach Blackshear enjoyed six very successful seasons in the AFL. For his career, he totaled 4,153 all purpose yards and he reached the endzone 50 times. He was named First-Team All-Arena for his accomplishments during the 1998 season. Coach Blackshear ended his playing days with an Arena Bowl Championship in 2001 as a member of the Grand Rapids Rampage.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity to continue the winning tradition in South Georgia that has been established over the past few years," said Head Coach Rodney Blackshear. "My first goal is to bring back the core of last years team and build around them."

The Wildcats will take Cooper Tire Field for their first home game of the season on Saturday March 28th against their division rival, the Florida Firecats.

Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by contacting the Wildcats office at 229-435-0205.
