CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Behind another strong performance from David Zevnik, the Wichita Falls Wildcats (19-10-3) completed the weekend sweep of Corpus Christi, topping the IceRays 3-1 on Saturday.
Josh Haverstrom had a goal and an assist, Sam Piazza and Kyle Bauman both potted a goal and Tyler Ledford chipped in with two assists. Zevnik made 24 saves on 25 shots to earn his 11th win of the season. He has now won five of his last six starts in net for the "ÃËCats.
Wichita Falls outshot the IceRays 14-10 in a penalty-filled opening period, and created a couple of noteworthy chances but could not break the deadlock. The "ÃËCats best chance came when Haverstrom dangled his way around two defenders and backhanded a shot from the high slot over the crossbar.
The Wildcats took control of the contest in the middle frame with a trio of tallies. Haverstrom was first to find the back of the net, as he stashed home Ledford's centering feed from behind the net for his eighth goal of the season.
Sam Piazza doubled the advantage at the 9:12 mark of the second stanza, leading a shorthanded rush with Will Vosejpka, before ripping a wrist shot inside the post for his fourth goal of the campaign.
Kyle Bauman then jumped into the action, combining with Haverstrom for his 10th goal of the season at the 16:56 mark. Standing at the goal line, Bauman fed Haverstrom in the slot. With traffic in front, Haverstrom held on a shot and played a perfect pass back down low to Bauman, who swept it into the net for his third goal in has many game.
The IceRays battled hard in the third period to try and claw their way back into the game, but would get no closer than a consolation goal from Grant Hutton at the 19:30 mark of the frame.
With the win, Wichita Falls stretched its win streak to four games, equaling the longest winning streak of the season thus far.
The Wildcats are back in action next Friday when they head to Amarillo to take on the Bulls in their final contests before the holiday break. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with video streaming available on FASTHockey.com.
