Washington Wild Things News Release
WASHINGTON, Pa-The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, announced the signing of OF Jose Rivero from Venezuela.
Rivero joined the Mariners organization as a free agent in 2006. After spending four seasons with the Mariners, he went to the Arizona Diamondbacks organization in 2010. He was selected to the Appalachian League All Star Team during the 2010 season. Rivero was signed by the Oakland Athletics organization in 2011.
"When Mario Yepez was injured, we immediately began looking for an outfielder to fill the opening on the roster, and we found him on the same team (Lara Cardinals)," said Assistant General Manager Steven Zavacky.
Rivero recently played in the Venezuelan Winter League for the Lara Cardinals. During the season, he hit .329 with 13 doubles and seven homeruns. Rivero played for the Montezuma Federals of the Freedom League during the 2012 season where he hit .301.
"Jose was also highly recommended by former Wild Thing Jhonny Montoya, and the reports we received from scouts confirmed everything that Mario and Jhonny told us," said Zavacky.
Washington will open its season on the road against the Boomers of Schaumburg May 17th. The Wild Things will return to CONSOL Energy Park May 24th to host the Southern Illinois Miners for the home opener. Individual tickets will go on sale April 13th. Groups, Fundraising, and Sponsorship opportunities are currently available. For information call 724-250-9555.
