Miners Sign Former Explorers Pitcher

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners and manager Mike Pinto have signed pitcher Brian Oliver.

The 6'1, 240 pound right handed pitcher comes to Southern Illinois following a dominant 2012 season with the Sonoran Explorers of the Freedom Professional Baseball League. Oliver led the league in wins with an overall record of 10-2. He finished the season with a 2.60 ERA while striking out 81 batters in 84.1 innings pitched. Oliver walked 26 batters and gave up 79 hits. He had been a teammate of former Miners catcher Chris Anderson with the Explorers.

"Brian is coming off a dominant season in 2012 that we hope he can build on here for the Miners", said Pinto. "He comes with some great scouting reports from last season and numbers to go with it.

This is a nice addition to our spring training staff."

Oliver entered professional baseball in 2009 following his college career at IndianaStateUniversity. In his 14 appearances as a rookie for the Golden League Champion Calgary Vipers he carried a 4.32 ERA.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year three times since its inception. It has also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007.
