Washington, PA-The Washington Wild Things announced former Chicago White Sox pitching prospect Jon Bengard has signed a contract with the team for the 2015 season.
The Riverside, CA native played two seasons in the White Sox system with rookie league teams; the Great Falls Voyagers of the Pioneer League and the Bristol White Sox in Virginia. During his time in rookie ball, Bengard, a prominent bullpen arm, compiled a 3-1 record and a 3.44 ERA in 39 appearances. In 55 innings, he recorded 64 strikeouts and earned nine career saves.
Last season, Bengard was part of the Voyagers pitching staff that once led the Pioneer League in ERA and strikeouts. From the bullpen, he finished the 2014 campaign with a perfect 2-0 record and a 2.76 ERA in 22 games. Bengard was named the Great Falls closer in 2014 and with that title captured eight saves. Bengard was drafted by the Sox in the 30th round of the 2013 MLB June Amateur Draft. Shortly after the draft, he was assigned to the Bristol White Sox. With Bristol in 2013, he appeared in 17 games and had a 1-1 record with a 4.43 ERA in 22 1/3 innings of work.
The six-foot-five, 185 pound right-handed pitcher threw collegiately at California Baptist University where in 2012 he was named the PACWest Conference Pitcher of the Year. The 2012 NCCAA All-American Second Team selection and NCBWA All-West Region honorable mention reached career bests his junior season. He made 14 appearances and 13 starts for the Lancers. Bengard went 11-2 with a 3.01 ERA in 80 2/3 innings, striking out 70 and limiting his opponents to a .234 average. He struck out a career-high 10 in seven innings in a 12-1 victory over the Academy Arts on March 2, 2012.
