Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA -- The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, announced Thursday first baseman, Zach Cates' contract has been sold to the Anaheim Angels.
Cates, a native of Tempe, AZ registered a .288 average, with 13 home runs, 48 RBI, and a team-leading 20 stolen bases in 88 games for the Wild Things in 2003.
"Zach's a team personality, and we'll miss him, but we're pleased that he is moving back to affiliated ball," said Ross Vecchio, general manager for the Wild Things. "Zach won the homerun hitting contest for the East last year at the All-Star game, and he was a very versatile player for us, playing both first and third base. He should fit well with the Angels, who could also use him as DH. The Angels are getting a very solid player."
This marks the sixth player the Wild Things have moved to affiliated ball in their short two year history, and the second since the 2003 season ended -- RHP David Bradley's contract was sold to the Milwaukee Brewers in October.
Cates will attend spring training with Cedar Rapids (A) of the Midwest League.
He was selected by the Cardinals, where he made his professional debut with Johnson City (TN) of the Appalachian League, in the 30th round of the 2002 draft from Oklahoma State University. He was second on the team with seven home runs.
The Wild Things open the 2004 Frontier League season at Falconi Field when they play host to the Kalamazoo Kings on Friday May 21st. Season and group tickets are available now; individual tickets go on sale Saturday, April 24.
