Wild sign dual threat quarterback Luke Zetazate
December 19, 2008 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Alaska Wild News Release
The Alaska Wild have signed quarterback Luke Zetazate for the 2009 season. Zetazate, known as "Z-Man," played in 2008 with the Shreveport-Bossier Battle Wings of the AF2 and has played overseas in Germany, Sweden, England and Switzerland as well in his native Canada. Zetazate (6'0", 210) is a dual threat quarterback who runs a 4.57 40 yard dash and brings a dynamic playmaking ability to the Wild.
Zetazate is also the head coach and offensive coordinator for the Team Canada 18-22 year old team.
Wild, IFL not affected by AFL season cancellation
With the recent suspension of the 2009 Arena Football League season, questions and concerns have been raised about the stability of the Alaska Wild and the Indoor Football League. The Wild and the IFL are not affiliated or affected by the AFL and the current season cancellation. The Wild remain healthy and stable and will play the 2009 season in the Indoor Football League, starting with the regular season opener on Monday, March 23 versus Fairbanks at the Sullivan Arena. Kickoff is 7:05PM.
The Wild may be affected in a positive way by landing some of the AFL's players. While some of the elite players in the AFL made upwards of $100,000, there is now a substantial amount of players with no employment. Many are figured to join with teams in the AFL majority owned AF2, which pays its players the same as the IFL.
Alaska Wild Director of Public Relations Jeff Worthington said, "The IFL now has an opportunity to set itself up as the premier indoor football product in the country. Players in Alaska will now have an even larger stage to showcase their abilities."
The IFL has reached a league-wide sponsorship agreement with Wal-Mart and is in negotiations with Nike and Home Depot.
The Eagle's Eye
We went through 6 quarterbacks last season, it was a position both the fans and coaches realized knew had to be a focus during the offseason. Nick Mystrom had leadership and character, Keith Smith was elusive and mobile, could we find the qualities of both players in one quarterback? We may have. The Wild signed quarterback Luke Zetazate, a mature player who will bring leadership to the offense, and runs a 4.57 40 yard dash. That's fast, especially for a quarterback. "Z-Man" is also the head coach and offensive coordinator for the Team Canada 18-22 year old football team.
