Wenatchee Wild News Release

WENATCHEE, Wash. - The Wenatchee Wild capped its second annual Pink at the Rink Weekend Saturday night at the Town Toyota Center by defeating the Fresno Monsters, 8-1. The win gave the Wild a 2-game sweep over the Monsters, one of the NAHL's new expansion teams.

Matt Cope (Lakewood, Colo.) staked the Wild to a 1-0 lead 2:27 into the contest when he scored a goal off of a turnover inside the Monsters' zone that was created by Brennen Parker (Villa Park, Calif.). However, Fresno knotted the score, 1-1, when Thomas Freeman redirected Tom Hilbrich's shot from the blue line into the net.

Wenatchee went into the first intermission with a 3-1 lead thanks to a pair of power-play markers. Chris Rumble (Chesapeake, Va.) scored the Wild's first man-advantage goal near the midpoint of the period on a wrist shot from the top of the near circle. Anthony Martinez (Schawmburg, Ill.) and Shawn Pauly (Bellingham, Wash.) earned the assists on Rumble's goal, which was his first of the season. Pauly put the Wild up by two goals with 6:48 left in the first frame when he knocked in a rebound off of a shot by Eliot Grauer (Mukioteo, Wash.). Ben Carey (Centennial, Colo.) also assisted.

The Wild decimated the Monsters in the second period, adding four more goals - three of which came during power-play time - to take a 7-1 lead into the second intermission. D.J. Vandercook (Farmington Hills, Mich.) put the Wild up by three goals 64 seconds into the second period when he redirected Rumble's shot from the high slot into the net during a power play. Carl-Johan Sjogren (Sodertalje, Sweden) earned the second assist on the goal, which was Vandercook's third of the season.

Seventy-four seconds after Vandercook scored, the Wild were celebrating another goal. This time it was Carey who lit the lamp on assists from Geoff Ferguson (Hanwell, NB) and Kyle Huson (Parker, Colo.).

Later in the second period, at the 12:16 mark, Carey scored his second goal of the contest, this one during a power play, when he buried a loose puck in front of the net. Pauly and Grauer assisted. Rumble notched his second goal of the game with 2:54 left in the second period when he scored on a wrister from the point during another power play. Bradley Shumway (Lafayette, Colo.) was credited with the lone assist.

Wenatchee's final goal of the contest was scored by Nicholas Anderson (Sacramento, Calif.) at the 11:20 mark of the third period during a power play. Parker and Blake Saylor (Centennial, Colo.) assisted on what was Anderson's first goal of the season.

Wenatchee outshot Fresno, 53-15. Wild goaltender Brandon Jaeger (Champlin, Minn.) made 14 saves to earn his sixth win of the season. Louis Puig and Peter Megariotis combined to make 45 saves for the Monsters.

The Wild scored an impressive six goals on nine power-play chances while the Monsters could not generate a power-play goal on its five chances. The Wild had 14 players record at least one point tonight. Rumble and Carey led the way with two goals and one assist apiece while Pauly scored a goal and two assists.

It was an all-pink weekend at the Town Toyota Center - including a pink ice surface - as the Wild and sponsors Safeway, Ag Supply Co. and Wenatchee Valley Medical Center teamed up to do its part in the fight against cancer. Fans were donned in pink clothing, as were the referees and Wild players. Following tonight's game, the Wild's specially designed pink jerseys were auctioned off with proceeds benefiting Wellness Place in Wenatchee.

The Wild (8-3) are on the road the next two weekends. They will travel to Fresno, Calif., next weekend (Oct. 22-23) for a 2-game series against the Monsters. Both of those games will begin at 7:35 p.m. The Wild will then head to Frisco, Texas, for a pair of games against the Texas Tornado the following weekend (Oct. 29-30). Faceoff for both of those games will be at 5:30 p.m. (PST).
