February 13, 2009 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Alaska Wild News Release

The new era for the Alaska Wild has officially begun. After interviewing seven candidates for the head coaching position, the Alaska Wild named Floyd Johnson head coach on Friday, February 13. Already hired to be the offensive coordinator, Johnson escalated his status during his interview by reinforcing his desire succeed and take Alaska to the upper echelon of indoor football. Johnson was also named the Director of Football Operations. Wild majority owner Randy "Doc" Deeter said, "Coach Johnson brings a different direction and new focus to this team. He has a tremendous desire to win here. I'm very excited about the 2009 season and the future for the Alaska Wild."

Johnson's experience playing both offense and defense at the highest level of indoor football in the Arena Football League brings knowledge of the game that the Wild has not seen in the past two seasons. He played for the wide receiver and defensive back for the Wichita Stealth and Mobile Wizards of the AF2 and the Arizona Rattlers of the AFL and attended workouts with the Oakland Raiders and Minnesota Vikings of the NFL.

Johnson's coaching resume brings a versatile perspective of the game to the Wild. Johnson started his coaching career as the defensive coordinator, defensive backs and wide receivers coach for the San Angelo Stampede in 2004. He then was the head coach of the Colorado Wildcats of the NIFL (National Indoor Football League) from 2005-2006 and most recently the head coach and assistant general manager for the New Mexico Wildcats in 2007-2008.

The Alaska Wild kicks off the 2009 season with training camp beginning March 9 at the AT&T Sports Pavilion in Anchorage. The Wild then play the Fairbanks Grizzlies during the St. Patrick's Day Preseason Game presented by Inlet Tower Hotel and Suites and Mixx Grill on Tuesday, March 17 at the Curtis Menard II Memorial Arena in Wasilla. The 2009 regular season begins on Monday, March 23 when the Wild host the Grizzlies at the Sullivan Arena at 7:05PM.
