TRAIL, British Columbia - Veteran forward Shawn Pauly scored 41 seconds after the opening faceoff and the Wenatchee Wild never trailed in an eventual 3-2 exhibition tournament game victory over the Trail Smoke Eaters at the Cominco Arena in Trail, British Columbia.
Kyle Huson extended the Wild lead to 2-0 eight minutes after Pauly's goal on a wrist shot. Trail cut Wenatchee's lead to 2-1 in the second frame on Josh Roberts' marker.
Another veteran forward, Ben Carey, recorded the eventual game-winner for the Wild with a little over six minutes to go in regulation. J.J. Beitel closed out scoring when he lit the lamp on a wrist shot with less than four minutes remaining in the final frame.
Wild goaltender Greg Lewis made 20 saves on 22 shots. Wenatchee recorded 38 shots.
The Wild concluded the 3-game tournament in Trail with two wins and one overtime loss. Pauly, Matt Cope and Trevor Stewart led the Wild with two goals apiece. Lewis and Robert Nichols each backstopped Wenatchee to one win.
The Wild will open the 2011-12 regular season at the ninth annual Showcase Tournament, which will take place Sept. 14-17 at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minn. The Wild's first game of the tournament, against the Janesville Jets, is set for Sept. 14 at 2:30 p.m.
