Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release

ROANOKE, VA - The Roanoke Valley Vipers, member of the United Hockey League (UHL), broke their eight-game losing streak Sunday evening at the Roanoke Civic Center, beating the Elmira Jackals by a final score of 6-5.

The game began much like Saturday night's match, during which the Vipers and Jackals battled back and forth for the lead. Chris Chaput scored first at the 4:46 mark of the first period to get Elmira on the board with an early lead.

Both teams remained quiet throughout the remainder of the first period, and it would be Mike Wiggins who would start things off for the Vipers in the second period at 1:37 off assists from Nathan Riddell and Rico Fatticci. Trevor Burgess would make it a 2-1 Jackals game with a power play goal at the 6:20 mark, but centerman Jan Jas answered with two consecutive goals at 10:49 and 14:12, both off the sticks of Wiggins and Mark Scott.

Trevor Burgess would tie it up again for the Jackals on his second power play goal of the night at 16:04 of the second to make it 3-3, which is where the score would remain through the end of the period. Mark Scott started off the third period with a goal at 4:28 with assists from Wiggins and Travis Smith. Just under five minutes later, Alex Jerofejevs would net a slap shot on the Vipers man-advantage off passes from Jan Jas and Matt Elich at 9:18 to make it 5-3. Wiggins would add his second goal and fifth point of the night at 10:41 as he tallied an unassisted, shorthanded goal to give the Vipers a three-goal advantage.

The Jackals would not go down quietly, however, as they made it close during the last five minutes of play and put Glenn Ridler to work in front of the Vipers net. Ridler and the Vipers held off the bite of the Jackals, however, as the team and the crowd celebrated in triumph.

Molly McMaster also suited up for the Vipers tonight in the final stop of her month-long campaign through the United Hockey League as the "UHL Cross-Checks Colon Cancer". The Vipers would like to thank Molly McMaster and the Colon Club as well as Fleet Laboratories and the UHL for being given the opportunity to participate in this special event.
