West Texas Roughnecks News Release
MIDLAND, TX.: In what was very much a defensive battle on Saturday evening (May 21) at the Ector County Coliseum, the West Texas Roughnecks (7-4) fell short to the Wichita Wild (4-7) by the score of 22-21. Trailing 21-16 to the Roughnecks in the fourth quarter, the Wichita Wild managed to take the lead late in the game at 22-21 when QB Phil Staback connected with WR Edgar Givens on an 11-yard touchdown pass. On the final possession of the game with three-tenths of a second left on the clock and no timeouts, the Roughnecks were unable to get a final play off therefore resulting in the 22-21 win for Wichita.
The Roughnecks opened the game taking a 3-0 lead on their first possession as kicker Zeke Arevalo connected on a 17-yard field goal, it would be the first of four field goals from Arevalo in the first-half. Later in the first quarter, Wichita kicker Dylan Pohlman would connect on a 29-yard field goal to tie the game at three. The Roughnecks would counter with another field goal from Zeke Arevalo at 31 yards out to close out the opening quarter leading 6-3.
Later on in the second quarter, Wichita kicker Dylan Pohlman would connect on an 18-yard field goal to tie the game at six after the Roughnecks defense was able to hold the Wichita offense out of the end-zone within the five-yard line. The Roughnecks would tack on two more field goals late in the second quarter as Zeke Arevalo recorded a 29-yard field goal to give the Roughnecks a 9-6 lead. Following the score, Roughnecks DB Derrick Boyd would intercept Wichita QB Phil Staback which would lead to a 48-yard field goal made by Zeke Arevalo, giving the Roughnecks a 12-6 lead. Wichita would tack on a late field goal before the end of the first-half resulting in a 12-9 Roughnecks lead at halftime. Roughnecks defensive backs Anthony Beck & Derrick Boyd both came away with interceptions in the first-half.
The Roughnecks were able to jump out to an 18-9 lead early in the third quarter as QB/WR Josh Floyd recorded a four-yard touchdown run following a four-play 25-yard drive. Both teams would exchange turnovers on the next few possessions including interceptions from Roughnecks LB Eric Henri and Wild DB Brandon Kaufman. Wichita was able to close the gap at the end of the third quarter at 18-16 when QB Phil Staback connected with WR Brian Murph for a 17-yard touchdown pass.
Leading by two, the Roughnecks were able to extend that lead early in the 4th quarter as Zeke Arevalo connected on his fifth field goal of the game from 44 yards out to give the Roughnecks a 21-16 lead. With under seven minutes remaining in the game, the Wichita Wild compiled a five-play 45-yard drive which would be capped off with an 11-yard touchdown pass from QB Phil Staback to WR Edgar Givens, giving Wichita a 22-21 lead. On their final possession of the game, the Roughnecks would have one more opportunity to pull off the come-from-behind win. Following an important conversion on a fourth down run by WR Josh Floyd, the Roughnecks were left with just a few plays with only seconds remaining. Following a sack on Roughnecks QB K.J. Black, the Roughnecks were left with three-tenths of a second to get a snap off in order to stop the clock by downing the football. However, the clock ran out on the Roughnecks offense as the Wichita Wild recorded the road win.
