WHL Names Monthly Award Winners

Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Regina Pats forward Connor Bedard has been named the McSweeney's WHL Player of the Month for the months of September and October.

Bedard, who last week was named an 'A' rated prospect for the 2023 NHL Draft, led all WHL skaters with 29 points (13G-16A) through September and October, finishing last month on a 14-game point streak.

The 17-year-old, who hails from North Vancouver, B.C., earned three or more points on four occasions over the months of September and October including the third five-point game (2G-3A) of his WHL career October 30 versus the Tri-City Americans.

Bedard also registered a hat-trick as part of a four-point night September 24 versus the Moose Jaw Warriors.

On three occasions this season, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound centre has recorded 10 or more shots on goal, including an 11-shot effort October 12 against the Prince Albert Raiders.

Bedard begins the month of November leading all WHL skaters in goals (13), assists (16), points (29), game-winning goals (five) and shots on goal (91).

Originally selected by Regina with the first-overall pick in the 2020 WHL Draft, Bedard has amassed 157 points (76G-81A) over 92 regular season games.

Connor Bedard and the Regina Pats are next in action Saturday, November 5 when they play host to the Swift Current Broncos (7:00 p.m. MT, Brandt Centre).

REBELS TANDEM KELSEY AND STOESSER NAMED WHL GOALTENDERS OF THE MONTH

The Western Hockey League announced today that Red Deer Rebels goaltenders Kyle Kelsey and Rhett Stoesser have been named the WHL Goaltenders of the Month for the months of September and October.

The two first-year netminders helped Red Deer start the 2022-23 WHL Regular Season with 13 consecutive victories, surrendering only 22 goals from the Club's first 13 contests.

Kelsey, who hails from Maple Ridge, B.C., posted a 1.87 goals-against average and .936 save percentage over his eight appearances in September and October, including a 26-save shutout of the Lethbridge Hurricanes October 8.

The 18-year-old allowed two or fewer goals in seven of his eight outings.

Stoesser, from Carstairs, Alta., leads the WHL with a 1.40 goals-against average while also posting a .934 save percentage over his five starts.

The 17-year-old earned two shutouts in October, blanking the Prince Albert Raiders with a 23-save effort October 22 and the Vancouver Giants with an 18-save performance October 28.

Kyle Kelsey was originally selected by the Moose Jaw Warriors in the fifth round of the 2019 WHL Draft and was acquired by the Red Deer Rebels in May of 2022.

Rhett Stoesser was originally signed by Red Deer in September of 2022.

The Red Deer Rebels are next in action Friday, November 4 when they visit the Swift Current Broncos (7:00 p.m. MT, InnovationPlex).

AMERICANS FORWARD GAVIN NAMED WHL ROOKIE OF THE MONTH

The Western Hockey League announced today that Tri-City Americans forward Jordan Gavin has been named the WHL Rookie of the Month for the months of September and October.

Gavin, who turns 16 years old November 13, led all WHL rookies over the months of September and October in assists (11), points (14) and power-play points (seven).

The product of Surrey, B.C. has amassed three multi-point games to start the 2022-23 WHL Regular Season including a four-point effort (2G-2A) in the Americans' home opener October 8 against the Edmonton Oil Kings.

He finished the month of October on a five-game point streak and in nine October outings the 5-foot-11, 143-pound forward found the scoresheet on seven occasions.

Originally selected by Tri-City with the second-overall pick in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft, Gavin has accrued 16 points (4G-12A) in 21 career WHL games with the Americans.
