Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Harlingen, TX - The Harlingen WhiteWings emphasized fielding in spring training today at Harlingen Field with just three days left until the regular season beings in Alexandria.

Defense has always been a key for the WhiteWings, who have played the best defense in each of the first two seasons of United League Baseball. The WhiteWings have committed 226 errors in 185 regular season games. By comparison, the Alexandria Aces have committed 242 errors during that span, which is the second fewest in the league.

The WhiteWings got an early start, reporting to the field at 9 a.m. for stretching. By 9:45, they were working on fielding drills, and for the first time, the pitchers got involved by fielding ground balls back to the bound. Sometimes they had to throw to first, and other times to second, depending on the simulation.

From there the WhiteWings took some batting practice against a regular pitcher who needed to get work in before moving onto hitting in the cage.

The WhiteWings will continue spring training tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. at Harlingen Field.
