Harlingen - United League Baseball's Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings announced today they have signed outfielder Omar Rosario, third baseman Joaquin Rodriguez, second baseman Antonio Arias, and pitchers Juan Trinidad, Tim Karkatselos, Tray Neal and Shand Hill.
A 31-year old out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Rosario's baseball career launched in 1997 as a 19-year old for the Arizona Athletics (Rookie Ball), when he hit .241 in 56 games. He hit .298 with 23 doubles, six triple, five home runs and 57 RBI in 116 games for Modesto (California League, Advanced-A) in 1999. He also scored 82 run while stealing 19 bases.
Rosario got his first taste of AAA in eight games with Sacramento in 2000, when he collected eight hits in 27 at-bats (.296 batting average). He split 2001 between Modesto, Visalia (California League, Advanced-A) and Sacramento, hitting a combined .222 with 20 stolen bases in 26 attempts.
Rosario has experience in Independent Baseball, when he hit .234 in 53 games for the Road Warriors of the Atlantic League in 2003.
A native of Miami Florida, the 24-year old Rodriguez spent the last three seasons in the New York Mets farm system, where he played third base, first base and shortstop. In 147 games, he is a career .259 hitter with 19 doubles, four triples, two home runs and 43 RBI between the Gulf Coast Mets (Rookie Ball), Brooklyn Cyclones (New York-Penn League, Short Season-A) and Savannah Sand Gnats (South Atlantic League, Class A).
Arias is a 28-year old from Orlando, Florida.
A 23-year old right-hander from San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, Trinidad was signed as a nondrafted free agent by the San Francisco Giants in 2002. He made his debut in the Dominican Summer League as a 17-year old in 2003, recording a 2-2 record with a 0.48 ERA. After two more seasons there, he moved onto Salem-Keizer (Northwest League, Short Season-A), where he went 2-1 with 16 saves and a 1.52 ERA. He struck out 14 and walked four in 23.2 innings. He spent 2007 with Augusta (South Atlantic League, Class A), where he went 3-3 with 18 saves and a 1.94 ERA. He struck out 50 in 51.0 innings while allowing 31 hits and 15 walks. Last season. Trinidad went 1-1 with a 1.53 ERA. In 59 innings, he struck out 49 while walking 20.
For his career, Trinidad is 14-11 with 37 saves and a 1.99 ERA. In 225.2 innings, he has struck out 205 while allowing 176 hits and 58 walks.
A 24-year old left-hander from Land O'Lakes, Florida, Karkatselos pitched for Eckerd College in 2008. He appeared in 15 games (one start) while compiling a 1-0 record with a 17.13 ERA. In 17.1 innings, he allowed 36 runs (33 earned) on 37 hits while striking out eight and walking 14.
Neal is a 21-year old left-hander from Glen Mills, Pennsylvania.
Hill is a 20-year old right-hander from Davie, Florida.
The WhiteWings open the 2009 season against the Coastal Bend Thunder on Thursday, June 11 at Harlingen Field. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6:05. It's Thirsty Thursday, meaning $1 draft beers.
The WhiteWings are members of United League Baseball, an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas. In its fourth season, the United League is preparing for a great summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Coastal Bend, Laredo, Harlingen and San Angelo. Opening Day is June 11.
