Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Laredo - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to break a tie en route to a 4-1 victory over the Laredo Broncos on Saturday at Veterans Field.

The WhiteWings (5-5) are now winners of three-straight.

Vinnie DeChristofaro (0-2) came in to pitch the top of the ninth for the Broncos, and after sandwiching an infield-single by Javis Diaz with strikeouts, closer Jonathan Miller came in, allowed an infield-single to Salvador Paniagua followed by an RBI-double to Joel Roa and a two-run triple to Arlon Quiroz.

That made a winner of Freddy Ballestas (2-0), who pitched a perfect eighth, striking out two.

Michael Barbosa pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth for his fifth save.

The WhiteWings scored the game's first run in the top of the fourth when Paniagua hit a leadoff home run, his third of the season, off of Dimitri Camareno to make it 1-0.

Greg Conrad recorded his first nine out on ground balls, allowing just a walk and an infield-single in the first inning to the Broncos (3-7). After picking up his first strikeout in the fourth, Doug Thennis tripled and scored when Nick Mahin reached on an error to tied the game 1-1.

This was it against Conrad, who retired the final 11 hitters he faced while going seven innings and striking out three.

The WhiteWings are off on Sunday before returning to action on Monday for a double-header against the Coastal Bend Thunder at Richard M. Borchard Fairgrounds Field in Robstown at 5:05 p.m.
