Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Left handed pitcher Joe Rogers, who joined the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings about midway in the 2006 season, has re-signed to play for the ball club in the upcoming season, it was announced by General Manager Cory Dirksen and Field Manager Eddie Dennis.

Rogers, 25, finished the 2006 season with a 6-1 record for the WhiteWings. He had the best earned run average - 2.84 - in United League Baseball.

A native of Tulsa and a resident of Anaheim, Calif., Rogers played for Santa Rosa, Calif., Junior College before signing with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2004.

"Joe was the best pitcher in the league last year," declared Dennis. "He can pitch at any level. We are glad to have him back and expect lots of wins from him."

Dirksen said the WhiteWings management feels very good about the return of Rogers. "We're fortunate to have him and his strong arm on our side," Dirksen said.

Last year was the first in the ULB for Rogers, but he has had quite a bit of experience elsewhere. He was signed as a non-drafted free agent on July 5, 2001 by the Cardinals, and he played for Johnson City in the Appalachian League in 2001; and Class A Peoria, another Cardinals farm club, in the Midwest League in 2002 and 2003.

He was released by the Cardinals in April of 2004 and signed by the Boston Red Sox the same month. He played for Sarasota in the Class A Florida State League in 2004, Portland, Maine of the Class AA Eastern League in 2004 and in 2005 he first played for Wilmington in the Class A Carolina League, all farm clubs of the Red Sox.

Later in the 2005 season he played for Fullerton, Calif., in the independent Golden Baseball League.

Rogers carries a lifetime 3.16 ERA in professional baseball.

The WhiteWings open their 2007 season at home on May 8, with a three-game series with the Amarillo Dillas. That series will be followed by another three home games with the ULB defending champions, the Alexandria Aces.

The WhiteWings are members of the United League Baseball, which played its inaugural season in 2006. The league members in addition to the WhiteWings are the Edinburg Coyotes, the Laredo Broncos, the San Angelo Colts, the Amarillo Dillas and the Alexandria, La. Aces.
