WhiteWings One Win or San Angelo Colts Loss Away From Clinching Playoff Berth

EDINBURG - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings beat the Edinburg Roadrunners 5-2 on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium to lower their magic number to clinch a playoff spot to one.

The WhiteWings (46-44) will clinch a playoff spot with a win or a San Angelo loss during the final two games of the regular season. The Colts are hosting the first-place Amarillo Dillas.

The Roadrunners (49-38) got on the board against David Cross (7-5) right away. Wilmer Pino led off the bottom of the first with a double, stole third and scored on a groundout by Robert Matlock to make it 1-0.

The WhiteWings responded against Eric Montoya (9-6) in the top of the second. Brian Nichols led off with a walk. Two outs later, Eric Gonzalez singled and Roberto Rodriguez walked. Javis Diaz followed with an RBI-single to tie the game at 1-1.

Arlon Quiroz led off the top of the fourth with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. Welington Dotel singled, moving Quiroz to third and Gonzalez followed with a two-run single to make it 3-1 WhiteWings.

With one out in the top of the eighth, Gonzalez doubled and Rodriguez hit an RBI-single, Diaz doubled, and oue out later, Yeurys Tejeda was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Leivi Ventura was hit by a pitch to force-in a run, making the score 5-1 WhiteWings.

Matlock led off the bottom of the eighth with a four-pitch walk. After a single by Nelson Teilon moved Matlock to third, a pick off throw to first base hit off of Nichols' glove to allow Matlock to score bring the Roadrunners within 5-2.

That was it against Cross, who struck out six while allowing eight hits and four walks in seven and two-thirds innings.

Mickey Cassidy recorded the final four outs for his eighth save.

The WhiteWings and Edinburg Roadrunners complete the regular season with a doubleheader of two seven-inning games on Sunday at 6:05 p.m. Right-handers Misael DeJesus (8-5) and Steve Raburn (5-3) are expected to right-handers Mark DiBernardo (8-5) and Tim Haines (3-10).
