Harlingen - United League Baseball's Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings announced today they have signed left-handed pitcher Cesar Pena, who pitched for Harlingen High School South (class of 2003) and the University of Texas Pan-American (class of 2007) today,
They also signed catcher Danny Etkin and right-handed pitchers Ryan Dixon and Juan Diaz.
Pena went to the state championship game with the Harlingen South Hawks in 2003 before attending UTPA, where he pitched at Edinburg Baseball Stadium, the home of the Edinburg Roadrunners, for four years.
The 24-year old Harlingen-native made the WhiteWings out of spring training.
Etkin is a Brooklyn, New York native who attended Long Island University.
Dixon is a 25-year old resident of St. Petersburg, Florida, who last pitched for New Jersey (Can-Am League) in 2006. His best year was for Johnson City (Appalachian League) in 2005, when he went 1-2 with a 2.81 ERA. He struck out 23 in 25.2 inning.
Diaz spent the last four seasons pitching for the Cleveland Indians' Rookie-level affiliates in the Dominican Summer League and Gulf Coast League. He holds a career-mark of 9-10 with a 2.94 ERA. In 50 games (ten starts), he has struck out 102 in 128.2 innings.
The WhiteWings open the 2009 season against the Coastal Bend Thunder tonight at Harlingen Field. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6:05. It's Thirsty Thursday, meaning $1 draft beers.
The WhiteWings are members of United League Baseball, an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas. In its fourth season, the United League is preparing for a great summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Coastal Bend, Laredo, Harlingen and San Angelo. Opening Day is June 11.
