WhiteWings fall with sloppy defense

Harlingen - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings committed six errors, including three during a seven-run fifth inning in which only one run was earned, in a 13-4 loss to the Amarillo Dillas tonight at Harlingen Field.

Only three of the Dillas' runs were earned.

The Dillas (27-23) struck right away against Carlos Artiles (2-1). Keanon Simon and Andrew Wong led off with singles and moved to third and second on a wild pitch. Carlos Figueroa hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.

The WhiteWings (23-27) tied the game against Ralph Roberts (5-2) in the second. Angel Reyes led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Juan Cabrera.

The Dillas took the lead right back in the third. Wong led off with a single and moved to third on a wild pickoff throw. Figueroa followed with another sacrifice fly to make it 2-1.

Wong led off the fifth with a single and Figueroa followed with an RBI- double to account for the only earned run in the inning. Terrance McClain singled and stole second while Figueroa moved to third. Stantrel Smith followed with a fly ball to left the Santana missed played for an error that loaded the bases. Trent Lockwood followed with a chopper between first and second base. Agustin Septimo and Brian Nichols collided as Figueroa scored. Eric Brown followed with a sacrifice fly that moved up all of the runners and then Artiles intentionally walked Justin Wenger to reload the bases. One out later, Simon hit a two-run double to knock out Artiles. Simon moved to third on a throwing error by Casey Allen in centerfield that allowed Wenger to score. Ryan Dixon came in and threw a wild pitch to score Simon and make the score 9-1.

Simon led off the eighth with a double and moved to third on a single by Wong. Figueroa followed with a fly ball to centerfield that Allen dropped, allowing Simon to score. One out later, Smith singled to load the bases. With two outs, Brown hit a three-run triple to make it 13-1.

In the bottom of the inning, Septimo and Joaquin Rodriguez singled before Rico Santana hit his second home run of the season to make it 13-4.

The WhiteWings and Dillas play game three of this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Harlingen Field. Right-hander Reymond Cruz (4-3) is expected to face left-hander Jesse Rodriguez (1-1).
