WhiteWings Drop Pitching Duel to Thunder

Harlingen - For the third-straight year, the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings open the season 1-1 with a 3-1 loss to the Coastal Bend Thunder (0-1) tonight at Harlingen Field.

After allowing two of the first three batters of the game to reach, WhiteWings starter Sendy Vasquez (0-1) retired 11-straight batters. Bryan Vickers ended that string with a double in the fifth. One out later, former-WhiteWing Amadeo Zazueta was hit by a pitch. Michael Lewis followed with an RBI-double and then Dustin Smith came up with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 Thunder.

Zach Beal (1-0) was matching Vasquez pitch-for-pitch, including allowing his first run in the fifth. Rico Santana led off with a single, moved to second after Jonathan Poterson walked, to third on a sacrifice bunt by Danny Etkin, and scored on a ground out by Joaquin Rodriguez.

The Thunder added a run in the top of the sixth. With one out, Manny Mejia singled to knock out Vasquez. Juan Diaz came in and loaded the bases before allowing a sacrifice fly to Kevin Butler to make it 3-1.

Benny Cepeda pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.

The WhiteWings and Thunder play game three of this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05. Gates open at 6:05. Right-hander Juan Peralta (0-0) will face right-hander Carlos Rangel (0-0).
