SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- A two-goal second period for the Mississippi RiverKings (12-10-3) added the insurance markers for the 'Kings as they snapped the Columbus Cottonmouths' (10-9-1) five-game winning streak in a 4-1 win at the Lander's Center Friday night.
The RiverKings got on the board first when Todd Hosmer's backhand shot beat Andrew Loewen to give the "ËKings a one-goal lead 8:31 into the first period. But the Cottonmouths tied the game just over the halfway point of the opening frame. On the power play, Jordan Braid found the back of the net over a scrambling David Wilson to tie the game at one, 14:48 into the first period. Matt Whitehead gave the RiverKings the lead once more as he netted a backhanded shot past a stretched out Loewen with 2:19 remaining to give the RiverKings a one-goal lead after the first period of play.
The RiverKings would add to the one-goal lead with two goals in the second period. Ian Finnerty picked up a pass from Nick Walsh to beat Loewen over the shoulder blocker side at the 6:25 mark of the second period to pick up his tenth goal of the season. Mike Baran notched his first goal of the season when his slap shot off the face off ricocheted off of a Columbus defender and past Loewen to put the "ËKings up by two with 9:40 remaining in the second period.
The RiverKings kept the three-goal lead for the remainder of the game. Neither teams capitalized on any offensive opportunities in a fight-filled third period as Darrell Stoddard, Tyler Sheldrake and Paul Kurceba dropped the gloves for the hometown crowd before the final horn sounded, giving the 'Kings a 4-1 victory.
David Wilson (5-4-1) stopped 27 of 28 shots against in the win for the RiverKings. Andrew Loewen (5-4-0) turned aside 29 shots of 33 against in the loss for Columbus.
The RiverKings hit the road again tomorrow night as they take on the Knoxville IceBears at 6:35 p.m. You can catch the live broadcast on Sports 56, 87.7FM and the America One Sports Network.
