Mississippi Surge News Release
The Mississippi Surge dropped a 5-2 decision to the Huntsville Havoc Friday in Huntsville, in a game featuring a bench filling brawl. Often major fights in hockey games feature players coming off benches, however this one had a different twist.
The wild melee erupted in the third period with just under five minutes left when a fight broke out in front of the Surge bench. The fight spilled into the bench when the door at the bench came open on impact. Huntsville players then stormed into the Surge bench, with the ensuing brawl involving practically every player on each team.
The upshot of the penalties was a Huntsville four minute power play, and Stuart Stefan scored just 37 seconds after play resumed, and Bryant Doerrsam made it 5-2 two and a half minutes later.
Mississippi had 62 penalty minutes assessed in the fight (64 on the game) and Huntsville had 71 minutes as a result of the brawl (83 on the game).
Huntsville's Brett Liscomb opened the scoring with the only goal of the first period. Justin Fox boosted the Havoc lead to 2-0 at 8:44 of the of the second period. Defenseman Jarkko Leppanen scored a power play goal for the Surge to cut the lead to 2-1 but Huntsville quickly regained a two goal lead when Chapen LeBlond scored a minute and a half later at 18:01 of the period.
Jeff Grant closed the gap to 3-2 for the Surge at 5:37 of the third period. The fracas broke out at 15:03 of the third period and once order was restored Huntsville capitalized on its only two power play opportunities of the game to make the final score 5-2.
The Surge plays at Pensacola Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. and returns home to face the Louisiana IceGators Sunday afternoon at 3:05 p.m.
