Whitecaps Set To Battle Charleston

Vancouver Whitecaps News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - Vancouver Whitecaps men (4-2-1) look to move closer towards the top of the USL First Division standings when they visit the in-form Charleston Battery (5-1-2) on Wednesday night.

After a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to Seattle Sounders on Friday, Teitur Thordarson's side rebounded in fine style the following night, as Vicente Arze's first-ever goal for the club secured Vancouver's first away win over Portland Timbers since July 2, 2004. Including the successful international friendly win over Major League Soccer side Los Angeles Galaxy in Edmonton, Alberta, on May 13, the Whitecaps have claimed four wins, a defeat, and a draw during the month of May.

With two games left to complete what has been a very busy month for Thordarson's squad, the Whitecaps have the chance to climb towards the USL-1 summit by claiming a result over a resurgent Charleston side. Vancouver lead the all-time series against the Battery with three wins, two defeats, and two draws. However, Vancouver have yet to win a game at Charleston's Blackbaud Stadium, having suffered two defeats and a draw on their last three visits to the South Carolina city.

Last season, the Whitecaps claimed a win and a draw from their two meetings with Mike Anhaeuser's side. Vancouver were held 1-1 by the Battery at Blackbaud on June 30 before Jeff Clarke scored a second-half winner in a 1-0 home win on August 25.
